COLLEGE BASKETBALL
The NCAA men’s basketball tournament saw its Final Four set and the faces are familiar.
Duke made the field for a 12th time, downing Gonzaga 66-52. Oddly, Duke’s bench did not produce a single point. The Blue Devils scored 13 of the final 14 points in the game to pull away from the Zags. Also on Sunday, Michigan State outlasted Louisville in overtime, 76-70. The Spartans are in the Final Four for the ninth time.
Wisconsin and Kentucky complete the foursome. Unbeaten Kentucky got a scare from Notre Dame on Saturday, prevailing 68-66 on a pair of free throws by Andrew Harrison with six seconds left. Kentucky is 38-0. Wisconsin made the Final Four for a second straight season by topping Arizona 85-78.
Michigan State and Duke meet on Saturday at 6:09 p.m. ET on Saturday in one semifinal and Kentucky and Wisconsin play at 8:49 p.m. in the other. The championship game is Monday, April 6.
In the women’s tournament, South Carolina and Notre Dame comprise half of the Final Four field and will meet Sunday night in Tampa. Connecticut plays upstart Dayton on Monday night and Maryland meets Tennessee. Connecticut is 35-1.
GOLF
Jimmy Walker became the first player to record multiple wins on the PGA Tour this season when he cruised to a four-shot win over Jordan Spieth at the Texas Valero Open in in San Antonio. Billy Horschel was third.
NBA
The Los Angeles Clippers won their seventh straight game, beating the Boston Celtics 119-106. … Dwyane Wade scored 40 points to lead the Miami Heat over the Detroit Pistons 109-102. … The New York Knicks, with 60 losses, have already clinched the worst record in their history.
COMING AND GOING
St. John’s parted ways with coach Steve Lavin and is trying to hire former Red Storm star Chris Mullin. … Texas fired coach Rick Barnes after 17 seasons. … Dave Leitao was hired to coach basketball at DePaul University again. During his previous tenure (2003-05), the Blue Demons made the NCAA tournament field once and the NIT twice. DePaul hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament since Leitao’s exit. … Vanderbilt University quarterback Patton Robinette, who will be starting medical school in the summer, announced he won’t play football anymore. He missed six games last season with a concussion.
