Pop-Star Lands In Hot Water In Spain
Prosecutors in Spain say that the Columbian pop-star, Shakira, needs to appear before the court for tax evasion. Shakira was charged back in December with tax evasion charges €14.5 million from 2012 to 2014, despite her official residence being in Panama.
They are also accusing Shakira of using 14 companies as tax havens to hid her income. Reports say that she will be summoned before the court in Barcelona to present evidence.
Shakira maintains her innocence, denying all accusations. Her Spanish representatives say she’ll have to settle all debts with tax authorities, though Shakira previously claimed she didn’t live in Spain until 2015.
She lives with her husband, Gerard Pique, in Spain since he is a professional football player for Spain and Barcelona. Other famous football stars are under investigation for tax fraud as well.
Christiano Ronaldo is a football star from Spain that faces charges of tax evasion last month. Ronaldo accepted a suspended two-year jail sentence and a €19.7 million fine.
Pique’s fellow teammate Lionel Messi in 2016 was found guilty of tax fraud having to pay a €250,000 fine, not including unpaid taxes and interest. For more on this case, check out the video above.
