They will be the first to dive in Pea Island
Scientists like Samantha Joye and Erik Cordes are doing research in a bacteria-rich ocean habitat off the coast of North Carolina called Pea Island. They will be the first team to dive and explore this unchartered location in the ocean. Both were reported to be very eager and expectant to make great discoveries there.
As reported by Huffington Post, Cordes, the expedition’s chief scientist who teaches at Temple University, said “The deep ocean isn’t a big black box that everything sinks into. It’s this really active part of our planet that recycles and replenishes nutrients back up to the surface to fuel the productivity that we take advantage of.”
Members of the team have definitely expressed the importance of studying the deep ocean and the microecosystems there that are, ultimately, part of a bigger picture.
Joye was actually totally overjoyed and compared herself to a kid in a candy store. Joye’s passion for bacteria is… inspiring!
These scientists are rightfully excited because they will be venturing into canyons and ecosystems for which no research yet exists. They are heading out from Woods Hole, Massachusetts and will journey down to the Florida-Georgia border.
