Cole’s streak lasted until the eighth inning.
Last night saw the New York Yankees take on the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. From the beginning of the game, the Yankees had a fire lit under them, thanks in no small part to their starting pitcher, Gerrit Cole. Cole was out to become the 13th player in the history of the Yankees to pitch a no-hitter game which, for the uninitiated, is a game where a pitcher successfully strikes out every batter that opposes them.

For the first seven innings of the game, it seemed like he was going to make it happen. This was the longest no-hit streak Cole had ever maintained in his career, and with only two innings to go, he had a genuine shot at making the record happen. Sadly, his streak was broken by Rays shortstop Isaac Paredes, who successfully hit a grounder in the eighth. While it was disappointing, Cole received a standing ovation for his performance as he departed the mound.

“I thought I had good stuff. I’ve never thrown a no-hitter so I can’t tell you what no-hit stuff looks like,” Cole told reporters after the game. “I’ve had a few good nights before. Honestly, in this situation, I’m just glad we got the win.”
The Yankees ultimately won the game 4-2.
