Trump Is Coming For Elijah Cummings
After weeks of feuding with four Democratic Congresswomen known as “The Squad,” President Trump is redirecting his ire at Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Democrat from Maryland. After Cummings criticized Trump’s handling of the crisis on the Southern border, Trump tweeted that Cummings should pay more attention to his “disgusting” Congressional district.
“Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous,” Trump tweeted. “His district is considered the Worst in the USA. As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place.”
Cummings responded with a level-headed Tweet. He said that, far from being a “bully,” he is merely advocating for his constituents.
“Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors,” Cummings tweeted. “It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”
Many Democrats denounced Trump’s tweets as racist–a charge Trump rejects.
“There is nothing racist in stating plainly what most people already know, that Elijah Cummings has done a terrible job for the people of his district, and of Baltimore itself. Dems always play the race card when they are unable to win with facts. Shame!” Trump tweeted.
