Big changes will be coming to the US Postal Service
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced the new 10-year strategic restructuring plan for the US Postal Service that will cut back on certain services and focusing on expanding operations through new upgrades. The strategic plan will mark “the largest rollback of consumer mail services in a generation” according to the Washington Post while benefitting the US Postal Service.

Postmaster DeJoy’s plan would cut back on resources for consumer services including changing the standard first-class delivery window from three to five days, higher postal rates, reducing post office hours, and slowing down certain services. Despite the drastic change in services, this plan will prevent the US Postal Service from losing $160 million over the next decade.
Postmaster DeJoy revealed his 58-page plan titled ‘Delivering for America’ as a model to make the US Postal Service more modern and competitive. The US Postal Service will be investing more in building a more productive infrastructure including ‘advanced package processing equipment,’ new uniforms, upgrades to postal offices, and a new fleet of energy-friendly delivery vehicles.

The 10-year plan will embrace the natural strengths of the US Postal Service while addresses serious weaknesses through cost-saving measures. One of the biggest cost-saving measures will be modifying first-class delivery services shifting transportation from unreliable air transportation to more reliable ground transportation. The future of the US Postal Service can only be determined with time but this plan will help to ensure a stable future for the longstanding institution.
