Sixth Season Shenanigans Ensue
Warning: This post will contain spoilers for a show that you should probably catch up on if you haven’t already: ‘Orange is the New Black.’
What was probably the most defining Netflix original series to grace the streaming platform and start the craze for original content, OITNB has been a staple feminist show that simultaneously depicts hilarity and hardship. Jenji Kohan’s drama/comedy mash up follows inmates of Litchfield County’s women’s prison in some of the craziest situations imaginable.
Now, its off to maximum security prison for the members of Litchfield. That’s right: Red, Piper, Alex, Crazy Eyes, and the whole gang are being relocated after a protest against unfair prison treatment went awry. It is astounding how once you take a step back from the over-dramatization of the shows core themes, how applicable the situation becomes to the current issue of the overpopulation in U.S. prisons.
Luckily, OITNB always portrays its darkest moments amidst comedic light, making it never feel like a dull or dragging show (Season 2, we’re still skeptical about you). But there’s no doubt that the show will have fans all over the world binge-watching on July 27th, since the show has made it all the way to Season 6.
Actress Natasha Lyonne had two words to describe the next season: “It’s heavy.” But that heaviness comes with a driving purpose to correct injustices in our world. Media and television in specific is one of the greatest outreaches to creating conversations in today’s age. Hopefully, Season 6 of ‘Orange Is The New Black’ will continue the wonderful work these ladies have been investing their careers into over the past years.
