This Presidential Candidate Is Not Backing Down From Trump
Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana and a Democratic candidate for president, says he pays no attention to what Donald Trump says about him on Twitter. When asked during a Fox News town hall about what he thinks of Trump comparing him to Alfred E Neuman, the Mad magazine character, Buttigieg had three simple words: “I don’t care.”
Fellow Democrats criticized Buttigieg’s decision to appear on Fox News, but Buttigieg says Democrats need to do a better job of reaching middle-of-the-road voters. In a characteristic Tweet, Trump criticized the network for giving Buttigieg airtime.
“Hard to believe that @FoxNews is wasting airtime on Mayor Pete, as Chris Wallace likes to call him,” Trump wrote. “Fox is moving more and more to the losing (wrong) side in covering the Dems. They got dumped from the Democrats boring debates, and they just want in. They forgot the people who got them there. Chris Wallace said, “I actually think, whether you like his opinions or not, that Mayor Pete has a lot of substance…fascinating biography.” Gee, he never speaks well of me – I like Mike Wallace better…and Alfred E. Newman will never be President!”
Buttigieg responded with his own jabs at the President, saying people are fascinated by Trump’s tweets because “it is the nature of grotesque things, you can’t look away.”
