Jessica Simpson’s new memoir reveals her battle with addiction

Popstar Jessica Simpson, a married mom of three, is opening up about her battle with substance abuse and addiction in her new memoir, Open Book. Simpson says that while she appeared to have it all together on the outside, she was secretly drinking alcohol and taking pills. In fact, a doctor told Simpson, 39, that she was seriously endangering her health.

Simpson says she hit “rock bottom” after hosting a Halloween party in 2017 with her husband, former NFL star Eric Johnson. She recalls telling her friends: “I need to stop. Something’s got to stop. And if it’s the alcohol that’s doing this, and making things worse, then I quit.”

Giving up alcohol was the easy part: “I was mad at that bottle. At how it allowed me to stay complacent and numb.” The real challenge was working through her issues–which include childhood sexual abuse–in therapy.

But now that she’s two years sober and has published her memoir, Simpson is thriving.

“When I finally said I needed help, it was like I was that little girl that found her calling again in life,” Simpson says. “I found direction and that was to walk straight ahead with no fear.”
