All over the world there has been an increase in vegetarian and vegan eating for a huge range of reasons. Although some individuals strongly believe that animals are friends, not food, there has also been an increase in creative meals that look, smell, and maybe even taste like meat, without a single bite of animal product.

An amazing example is this smoked watermelon that so very much resembles a smoked fresh ham. It is prepared exactly the same way, besides being a watermelon and all.

The entire watermelon is peeled, smoked, and cured over oak wood. The exterior becomes blackened and smokey, and when you cut into it, its pink flesh looks like rare meat. This may upset barbecue dads all over the country, but it is sweet, savory, and delicious.

You absolutely don’t have to become a vegan to eat all the delicious and creative meatless dishes they come up with! Consider a crab cake that’s not a crab cake because it’s made with hearts of palm. They have their own bacon – eggplant or tempeh bacon.
