Eli and Peyton Manning are the news stars in a hilarious commercial for DirecTV. This commercial is great because it stars Eli and Peyton Manning doing a rap about DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket capabilities.
Manning Brothers Football and DirecTV Tie-in
For those who don’t know Eli and Peyton Manning, which is possibly 1% of Americans, they are famous brothers who are both extremely talented quarterbacks in professional football. Thus the tie in with football and DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket was a match made in heaven. Most people know and love the Manning brothers, but may have not seen this side of them as they are very silly with their rap commercial and make it a lot of fun for the fans while at the same time drumming up interest in DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket.
Why the Commercial Is So Effective
The name of the commercial is “Football on Your Phone” and it has a lot of fun lyrics. There is a section where Eli and Peyton Manning rap making fun of a guy for using his phone to make a phone call. They say “your phone ain’t for calling” and “your phone’s for footballing” which gets the point of the commercial across.
In general, commercials that have celebrities in them tend to be successful because people like to see famous celebrities endorsing a product. The average person sees a celebrity and thinks of all the fun things they like about that celebrity. In this case, people will see the Manning brothers and think about all the great times they have spent watching or playing football. So then when Eli and Peyton Manning then tell them about a way to enjoy football even more using DirecTV, many people get into it. It is important that there is an effective tie in to the product. Years ago when Michael Jordan was selling batteries it was hard to see the tie in and consequently the ad had less impact than it otherwise could have if the product tie in was more explicit. Because Eli and Peyton Manning have a direct and very clear tie-in to football, the commercial works great.
Fun, Fun, Fun
The best part about this commercial is that it is just flat out fun. Sure it promotes DirecTV and that is great, but the rap is fun to see even aside from that. Eli and Peyton Manning don’t take themselves too seriously in this commercial and it is something that the average football fan is going to want to watch over and over. In fact, there is a chance that it will go viral and people will find themselves with “Football on Your Phone” stuck in their head because it is really a catchy rap. A good commercial really should be a lot of fun because otherwise viewers can resent the commercial break from their show. This commercial is so fun that people might hope to see it again during the next commercial break!
