Meet Marina Abramovic a Serbian performance artist based in New York. The majority of her work explores the relationship between performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind.
In 1988 Marina walked over 2000 miles to the Great Wall of China to say goodbye to her former lover and collaborator Ulay. Over 20 years later Marina staged a milestone performance at MOMA that saw her sitting, gazing silently across from museum visitors over 90 days. And, one of the most memorable moments came when Marina was reconnected with Ulay.
One of the greatest things about performance is that you have to feel, you don’t just hang on the wall like a painting. A great man named Thich Nhat Hanh once said, “the past is gone, the future is not yet here, and if we do not go back to ourselves in the present moment, we can not be in touch with life.”
When asked what she thought the world was going to be like in 100 years she said she would be more than happy to leave like right now. Why you ask? Well, she really does believe that science fiction of the 70’s is already present today. And if you look at many books today, they say that most likely by 2020 we will all be living in a virtual reality.
Think about it, our time is almost always consumed with technology. We are addicted to knowing everything on demand and Marina is trying to do the exact opposite, eliminate technology. Although Marina knows that she will never be able to fully get rid of technology, she does want people to know that it’s okay to use it but do not become a prisoner to it.
