The Liberace biopic which starred Michael Douglas as the renowned pianist and Matt Damon as his lover topped this year’s Creative Arts awarding ceremony with a fantastic eight wins.
For the Big Win
The 65th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards was held in the Nokia Theater, LA a week before the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards set to roll in the same venue on September 22. HBO’s short film adaptation of Liberace’s later life was also nominated in six categories in the Primetime Emmys.
The Tony Awards telecast and Boardwalk Empire came in next to the mini-film with four Emmy statues respectively in tow. Additionally, other big winners of the night were Timm Gunn and Heidi Klum’s Project Runway as well as Carrie Preston who guest-starred in The Good Wife.
Winners in Various Categories
Netflix’s House of Cards, which stars Kevin Spacey, came in the winner for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series while one of the eight Emmys Behind the Candelabra mini-film won was Outstanding Casting for Miniseries, Movie or a Special.
The highest honors in the comedy genre went to 30 Rock while Louie of FX Networks won best lead role for a comedy series.
For the animation genre, South Park’s Raising the Bar was the top winner and Disney Mickey Mouse Croissant de Triomphe was named Outstanding Short-Format Animated Program.
Nickelodeon’s documentary, Nick News With Linda Ellerbee—Forgotten But Not Gone: Kids, HIV & AIDS, which dealt with the current issue of AIDS and kids won Outstanding Children’s Program.
For the Multi-Camera category, Fox’s Master Chef had won the highest award. Two winners were announced for the Outstanding Art Direction for Variety or Nonfiction Programming – the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony which was aired over NBC and another NBC program, Saturday Night Live.
For the directorial work, the director from Behind the Candelabra bagged the honor of being named the outstanding in this field. HBO’s Boardwalk Empire won the best art direction for single camera series.
For a variety show, Outstanding Stunt Coordination for Comedy Series, Nickelodeon’s Supah Ninjas won and bested the other nominees of the said category.
The Outstanding Special Class Programs was awarded to CBS’s airing of the 66th Annual Tony Awards. For the non-fiction class, the winner came out as History.com’s Remembering 9/11.
Other winners of the recently finished Creative Emmys include The Voice, How I Met your Mother, Big Bang Theory and Louis C.K.: Oh My God. Oprah also got an award at night – Oprah’s Life. All in all, HBO topped the list of networks who went home bagging the most Emmy statues with 20 in tow – one for a program and nineteen for its individual stars. Second place goes to CBS with 3 Emmys for programs and 12 for the individuals with a total of 15 wins.
A Night of Firsts
The ceremony was an awarding event full of firsts. Bob Newhart won his first Emmy ever for guesting in The Big Bang Theory. Throughout his acting career, he was nominated for six Emmys but the recent statue was the first given to him for his comedic prowess.
