Australian dollars will feature indigenous images in the future.
Earlier this week, Australia’s Reserve Bank announced that, at an indeterminate point in the future, the designs present on Australian dollars will be changing. Specifically, rather than the current design of late British monarch Queen Elizabeth III present on the $5 bill, the new $5 will feature a design inspired by the indigenous Australian people, as well as the current Australian government.

According to the Reserve Bank, the front of the note will have a design meant to honor “the culture and history of the First Australians.”
“The other side of the $5 banknote will continue to feature the Australian parliament,” the Reserve Bank added.
“The monarch will still be on the coins, but the $5 note will say more about our history and our heritage and our country, and I see that as a good thing,” Treasurer Jim Chalmers said at a press conference, saying that the change would strike a good balance between honoring the British monarchy, which still serves as the country’s figurehead, and their own people.

The precise design has not been decided upon yet, with the Reserve Bank planning to consult members of the indigenous Australian population for ideas and approval. This process will likely take several years; in the meantime, the current $5 notes will still be accepted as legal tender, and will remain as such even once the new bills are implemented.
