In a bold move signaling his continued political influence, former President Donald Trump’s administration has dismissed over a dozen Justice Department officials who were involved in prosecuting him. The decision comes after the officials played key roles in the investigations led by former Special Counsel Jack Smith, who pursued charges against Trump for his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and mishandling of classified documents.
According to reports, Acting Attorney General James McHenry issued the terminations, stating that these officials could no longer be trusted to support the president’s agenda. McHenry emphasized that, given their involvement in the cases against Trump, he did not trust them to carry out their duties in good faith moving forward.
“The acting Attorney General does not trust these officials to assist in faithfully implementing the President’s agenda,” a Justice Department source told Fox News.
This purge comes on the heels of Smith’s controversial report earlier this month, in which he outlined Trump’s “unprecedented criminal effort” to retain power after losing the 2020 election. However, Smith’s efforts to bring charges against Trump ultimately stalled after the president’s re-election, with some even questioning the motivations behind the investigation.
Trump’s legal team has continuously labeled Smith’s actions as politically driven. The former president has denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the charges against him were baseless.
In other developments, a Trump-appointed prosecutor has launched a review into the Justice Department’s decision to charge hundreds of individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol attack. This internal probe focuses on the felony obstruction charges filed against many of the rioters, further complicating the legal landscape.
Meanwhile, Trump continues to lash out at Smith, referring to him as “deranged” and accusing him of “weaponizing” the legal system to target his political opponent, President Joe Biden. On social media, Trump called Smith’s investigation part of a broader effort to undermine his political career.
Despite the turmoil, the Justice Department’s restructuring is not limited to the high-profile dismissals. An internal email offered federal employees a voluntary separation package, citing the upcoming launch of the Department of Government Efficiency, which may result in cuts across multiple agencies. As many federal workers eye exit opportunities, the Trump administration is positioning itself to reshape Washington, D.C. and reassert control.
Trump’s latest actions are part of his ongoing efforts to influence government operations while navigating the political and legal challenges surrounding him. The reshuffling of the Justice Department signals that, even out of office, Trump’s political presence remains a force to be reckoned with.
As the dust settles, questions remain about the future of the federal government under Trump’s influence and the fallout from these bold moves.
