Out of screen, out of mind
Today you have access to information about absolutely everything absolutely all the time. This includes access to your ex’s numerous social media accounts. Knowing what they have for breakfast can be more harmful to your mental health than you think. It also doesn’t help to see them looking good on a night out or smiling sweetly with their new boo.
The relationship itself can even be ever-more complicated in this digital age, so it’s important to draw boundaries for where it ends.
The writer Michael Banovac boiled down four key things to remember during the difficulty of a break-up. One simple but important thing to remember is to make a clean break. This means also disconnecting your online connections. If you don’t have the heart to block or delete your ex, Banovac suggests hiding their online activity from view.
Another thing to do is get their images off your own profiles. You don’t have to rid them of existence, but keep them off those online platforms that are supposed to be your own spaces.
If you and your former partner shared accounts like Netflix or Spotify, it’s time to log out and make a new one for just you.
Finally, resist the temptation to stalk their statuses. It may be something you are tempted to do, but you know it’s not healthy!
