A group of retired military officials have come forward in a public letter supporting Vice President Kamala Harris amid ongoing political debates surrounding the 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The letter, penned by National Security Leaders for America, praises Harris for her leadership and readiness to tackle national security challenges, countering recent attempts by some to link her to the withdrawal’s tumultuous execution.
The letter highlights Harris’s significant role in reinforcing U.S. alliances and her efforts in responding to international crises, from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to tensions in the Indo-Pacific. According to the group, Harris has proven her mettle as a leader capable of guiding the country through complex global issues.
Conversely, the letter places considerable blame on former President Donald Trump for his administration’s handling of Afghanistan policy, particularly criticizing the agreement made with the Taliban without the involvement of the Afghan government. This deal, which led to the release of 5,000 Taliban fighters, significantly complicated the situation for the incoming Biden administration, the letter argues.
The retired generals assert that the conditions Trump left for President Biden and Vice President Harris did not provide a feasible framework for an orderly withdrawal, ultimately endangering both American troops and the mission’s success. The chaos that ensued is depicted as a direct result of poor planning and foresightedness by the previous administration.
The letter arrives amidst a flurry of reports and statements from both sides of the political aisle, with Republicans and Democrats each crafting narratives around the Afghanistan withdrawal’s failures. However, the veterans’ group firmly supports Harris, emphasizing her qualifications and criticizing the politicization of national security issues.
Vice President Harris has not personally responded to the letter but continues to focus on her duties within the administration. The debate over the withdrawal remains a contentious issue as both political parties prepare for upcoming electoral challenges.
