Federal Charges and a Not Guilty Plea
Jack Teixeira, the 21-year-old Air National Guardsman who allegedly leaked highly classified military documents on social media, entered a plea of not guilty to six federal charges during his court appearance in Massachusetts on Wednesday.
Teixeira was indicted earlier this month on multiple counts related to the willful retention and transmission of classified information pertaining to national defense. Since his arrest in April, he has been held in federal custody.
Hailing from Massachusetts, Teixeira stands accused of sharing classified military documents on the popular social media platform Discord. These documents included detailed intelligence assessments of both allies and adversaries, with information concerning the state of the war in Ukraine.
According to prosecutors, Teixeira, a junior enlisted airman serving in the Massachusetts Air National Guard’s 102nd Intelligence Wing, began posting information and photos of the classified documents online around December 2022 and January respectively.

Teixeira held a top-secret security clearance, and court-referenced internal Air Force memos revealed that his superiors had repeatedly warned him about inappropriately accessing classified intelligence.
During the courtroom proceedings, Teixeira smiled and waved at his family upon entering. Later, he stood alongside his lawyers, dressed in an orange jumpsuit and clutching rosary beads, as he pleaded not guilty to each count in the brief hearing.
Teixeira’s defense attorneys argued that their client did not expect the classified information he posted on Discord to be disseminated further on the internet. They criticized the prosecution for exaggerating Teixeira’s potential threat to national security.
Jen Reed, the spokesperson for Teixeira’s family, expressed their unwavering support for him, stating, “We remain as committed as ever, and our entire family continues to share complete and unwavering support of Jack as he faces this matter. The important thing is Jack will now have his day in court. And as we move through this process, we are hopeful that Jack will be getting the fair and just treatment he deserves.”
The next hearing in Teixeira’s case is scheduled for August 9th.
