President Joe Biden faced a critical moment on Tuesday as he secured his position for the Democratic nomination amidst rising internal concerns about his campaign’s viability. The stakes were high in Washington, where the president’s steadfast refusal to step aside has triggered alarm within his own party.
Colorado Senator Michael Bennet expressed deep reservations about Biden’s ability to win in November, suggesting that former President Donald Trump could achieve a “landslide” victory. Bennet’s comments reflect growing unease among some Democratic lawmakers regarding Biden’s campaign strategy and overall prospects.
“It’s true that I said that,” Bennet told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins. “Donald Trump is on track, I think, to win this election and maybe win it by a landslide and take with him the Senate and the House.” Bennet emphasized that his concerns are not just political but moral, stressing the gravity of the situation for the future of the country.
Biden’s administration managed to quell some dissent during intense meetings with Senate and House Democrats on Tuesday. Despite this, Biden’s standing within the party has been significantly weakened by recent events, including a poor debate performance and an increasingly energized Trump campaign.
In the wake of Bennet’s public statements, which do not represent the official stance of all Democratic senators, there is an undeniable sense of urgency within the party. The Democratic establishment, including Senate and House leaders, has offered cautious support for Biden, acknowledging the challenges he faces but stopping short of directly challenging his candidacy.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in a statement on MSNBC, advised Democrats to keep their concerns private for now. “Just hold off, whatever you’re thinking, either tell somebody privately but you don’t have to put that out on the table until we see how we go this week,” she urged.
As Biden prepares for a press conference on Thursday following the NATO summit, the spotlight will be on his performance and ability to address growing doubts. Any missteps could further undermine the fragile support he has managed to maintain.
The current situation underscores a critical moment for Biden’s campaign as he navigates the tumultuous political landscape. With Trump gaining momentum and Biden facing intensified scrutiny from within his own party, the path to reelection appears increasingly precarious.
