Sundays will never be the same
Not for months.
The NFL season continues Week 1 play on Sunday and we are now content. All is right in our world.
You’ve likely followed the hype surrounding the Cleveland Browns, who haven’t had a winning season since 2007, but now enjoy the talents of receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, plus the quarterbacking wizardry (small sample) of second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Browns host the Tennessee Titans at 1 p.m., with CBS showing the game. As always, check local listings and your neighborhood sports bars for viewing availability.
Sunday’s nightcap is the Pittsburgh Steelers at the New England Patriots. We shall go to the cliché file and pull out this collector’s item: These two teams just don’t like each other. NBC, 8:20 p.m.
You say you like college football? It is everywhere, wall to wall. Pick and choose as you may. An odd favorite here is No. 24 Boise State (1-0) at home on Friday night against Marshall (1-1). Boise State stunned Florida State on the road last week and the Thundering Herd left hoofprints (56-17) on VMI. Another plus: This one is on Friday night. Yay! ESPN2 at 9 p.m.
Saturday at noon, we get a battle for Ohio bragging rights. Cincinnati (1-0) takes on No. 5 Ohio State (1-0) at 12 p.m. (that’s noon, folks) on ABC. In the evening, there’s a brawl at the upper echelon as No. 6 LSU (1-0) visits No. 9 Texas (1-0). ABC treats us to this at 7:30 p.m.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the U.S. Open tennis tournament. We hate to be remiss. So the men’s single finals are Sunday at 4 p.m. on ESPN; the women’s title is at stake Saturday at the same time and network coordinates.
Hard to believe, but the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have a date on Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. on ESPN. They hardly ever play each other, except for a lot. Masahiro Tanaka pitches for the Yanks and Rick Porcello goes for the Sox.
It’s a lot, but you can handle it. Put that heiner in the recliner and enjoy.
