Alcohol Limit Bill Instated In Ireland
After spending over 1,000 days in parliament, Ireland has officially instated a new bill intended to reduce the country’s overall consumption of alcoholic beverages. The bill, named Public Health (Alcohol), implements, among other things, a minimum price per unit of alcohol, restrictions on advertising for alcoholic drinks, separation of alcoholic products from retail areas, and cancer warning labels on containers.
Ireland’s Health Minister, Simon Harris, said the bill was a positive step for the country in separating alcohol and the problems it causes from its culture.
Ireland has ranked high in the last few years for overall consumption of alcohol, and has it on record that alcohol-related complications cause at least three deaths per day in the country. For these reasons and others, the bill also has the full support of the Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, who hopes that this new legislation will save many lives down the line.
