A couple of young quarterbacks making their first NFL starts also made their mark

Kyle Allen, stepping in for the injured Cam Newton, led the Carolina Panthers to a 38-20 road win over the Arizona Cardinals, throwing four touchdown passes.

Daniel Jones, replacing Eli Manning for the New York Giants, ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more in a 32-31 road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bucs rookie kicker Matt Gay, who had earlier missed two extra points, missed a 34-yard field goal on the final play. The Bucs had led by 18 points.

Patrick Mahomes piloted the Kansas City Chiefs to a 33-28 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, passing for 374 yards and three touchdowns. And Teddy Bridgewater, in for the injured Drew Brees, led the New Orleans Saints to a 33-27 upset in Seattle of the Seahawks. He passed for 177 yards and two scores. The Seahawks had been 15-0 at home in September since Pete Carroll became a coach in 2010.

Also:
Receiver Antonio Brown, released this season by the Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots, announced via social media he would not play in the NFL again.

College Football:
Previously winless UCLA, which trailed by 32 points in the third quarter, overcame a record nine touchdown passes by No. 19 Washington State’s Anthony Gordon and scored with 1:17 left to post a 67-63 victory Saturday night in Pullman, Washington. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for 507 yards and five TDs for the Bruins.

Jonathan Taylor rushed for 203 yards and two TDs as No. 13 Wisconsin blasted No. 11 Michigan 35-14.

No. 15 UCF’s streak of 27 consecutive regular-season victories ended as Pitt scored on a gadget play with 56 seconds left to win 35-34.

Chase Garbers threw four TD passes and No. 23 Cal stopped Ole Miss on the 1-yard line on the final play in a 28-20 triumph.

NASCAR:
Martin Truex Jr. had never won consecutive races before. Now he owns the first two victories of the Monster Energy Cup Series championship. Truex led Joe Gibbs Racing to a 1-2-3 finish at Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday night to post his first back-to-back victories. Kyle Busch was second.

Baseball:
George Springer homered three times and Justin Verlander won his 20th game as the Houston Astros clinched the American League West for the third straight year, beating the Los Angeles Angels 13-6.

The St. Louis Cardinals swept their series with the Chicago Cubs to claim a playoff berth.

The Atlanta Braves clinched the National League East.

The San Diego Padres fired manager Andy Green while the Miami Marlins extended Don Mattingly by two years.
