A Sports Filled Weekend It Was
Jordan Spieth took a 1-shot lead into the final round of the Travelers Championship on Sunday, fell apart on the back nine and then won the tournament in stunning fashion.
His chip shot of nearly 62 feet on the first playoff hole found the cup, lit up the crowd at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, and earned the 23-year-old Texan his second win of the season and 10th of his career. The only other player with 10 PGA Tour victories by the age of 24? Tiger Woods.
“This is probably my luckiest win, for sure, with all the breaks I got today,” Spieth said.
NASCAR: Kevin Harvick enjoyed a few firsts at Sonoma Raceway in California. He won for the first time this season, taking the Toyota/Save Mart 350, won for the first time at Sonoma and won for the first time in a Ford (his team, Stewart-Haas Racing, switched this year from Chevy). Harvick won under caution after Kasey Kahne crashed out. The victory was the 36th of Harvick’s career.
Clint Bowyer, Harvick’s Stewart-Haas teammate, was runner-up for the second time this season.
MLB: The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 12-6 on Sunday for their 10th consecutive victory and 16th in 17 games. The Dodgers lead the Arizona Diamondbacks by 2 ½ games in the National League West…The Minnesota Twins beat the Indians 4-0 to sweep that road series and take over first place in the American League Central by a half-game over Cleveland…The Texas Rangers handed the New York Yankees their ninth loss in 11 games, 7-6. The Yankees and Boston Red Sox are essentially tied for the lead in the AL East.
College World Series: Florida and Louisiana State meet in the College World Series final that begins Monday night. LSU topped Oregon State 6-1 and Florida beat TCU 3-0 to set this matchup. Florida has never won the NCAA baseball title in 11 previous appearances; LSU has seven titles in its 18 CWS showings. It’s a best-of-three series.
