A Heartfelt Farewell to Tafari Campbell
Over the weekend, a somber atmosphere enveloped Martha’s Vineyard as news spread about the untimely demise of Tafari Campbell, the personal chef of former President Barack Obama. The unfortunate incident occurred while Campbell was paddleboarding near the ex-president’s residence on the island. Massachusetts state police swiftly responded to the distress call and confirmed the unfortunate news.
The search for Campbell, aged 45 and hailing from Dumfries, Virginia, began Sunday evening after a witness reported seeing a male paddleboarder struggling in the water and disappearing beneath the surface. Despite the authorities’ efforts, Campbell did not resurface, leading to shock and grief among those who knew him.
Campbell had been an integral part of the Obama family, serving as a cherished member of their household and even working in the White House during Barack Obama’s presidential term. His culinary skills, creativity, and passion for bringing people together through food left a lasting impression on the Obamas, leading them to extend their association beyond the White House years.
Tafari Campbell (Obama’s private Chef who drowned today) may not have been the best swimmer… but this video shows he was more than capable of swimming the distance of a small pond with still water ⚠️

In a heartfelt statement, Barack and Michelle Obama expressed their deep sorrow at losing a beloved friend. They fondly remembered Campbell as a warm, fun, and exceptionally kind person who brightened their lives with his presence. The couple explained that when they departed from the White House, they couldn’t bear to part ways with Campbell, and he graciously agreed to remain with them, becoming an inseparable part of their lives.
The search operation, conducted with diligence, yielded results on Monday morning when sonar equipment detected Campbell’s body approximately 100 feet from the shore of Edgartown Great Pond. Tragically, he was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
Campbell leaves behind his wife, Sherise, and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin, who now face the immense grief of losing their beloved husband and father. The loss of this remarkable man has touched the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
As the community mourns the passing of Tafari Campbell, the outpouring of condolences and support serves as a testament to the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him.
In memory of Tafari Campbell, his legacy of kindness and passion for food will undoubtedly endure as a source of inspiration for generations to come. May he rest in peace.
