Japan Unveils the E10 Shinkansen – A High-Speed Revolution With British Design
Japan has introduced the groundbreaking E10 Shinkansen, a high-speed bullet train capable of reaching 200mph (320kph) while boasting cutting-edge earthquake resistance technology. In a historic first, the design of this iconic train was entrusted to a British firm, marking a new chapter in UK-Japan collaboration on rail innovation.
London-based design consultancy Studio Tangerine was chosen to craft both the train’s striking two-tone exterior and its sophisticated interior. Set to launch in 2030, the E10 will replace the current E2 and E5 trains on the Tohoku route, which connects Tokyo to Aomori in northern Japan.
A Fusion of Japanese Heritage and British Design
The E10’s sleek exterior pays tribute to the diverse landscapes it will traverse. The top half is painted in “Tsugaru green,” inspired by the lush forests along the route, while the lower half features “Evening elm,” a deeper shade reflecting Japan’s serene coastlines. Adding to its distinct identity, the train’s design incorporates subtle graphics inspired by Sakura flowers—an iconic symbol of Japan.
Inside, passengers will experience an atmosphere of elegance and tranquility, influenced by traditional Japanese aesthetics. Indirect ambient lighting creates a soft, calming glow, while the seating across all classes is designed for maximum comfort and efficiency. Features include:
- Large headrest side wings for added privacy
- USB ports for convenient charging
- Wide tray tables for work or dining
- Sound-insulating dividers to enhance the travel experience
Built for Safety and Speed
JR East has equipped the E10 with state-of-the-art safety measures, including shorter braking distances and dynamic dampers that absorb vibrations during earthquakes, further reinforcing Japan’s impeccable rail safety record. Since the launch of the first Shinkansen in 1964, bullet trains have maintained a perfect passenger safety record, a legacy the E10 will proudly continue.
Matt Round, Chief Creative Officer at Studio Tangerine, expressed excitement over the project, stating:
“The E10 Shinkansen represents a milestone in UK-Japan collaboration within the rail sector, setting new benchmarks for hospitality-focused design and sustainable travel. With its blend of Japanese spirit, innovation, and user-centric design, the E10 is poised to redefine high-speed rail travel for decades to come.”
The Future of High-Speed Travel
With its seamless blend of safety, speed, and design excellence, the E10 Shinkansen is set to become a source of national pride for Japan and a must-experience attraction for travelers worldwide.
