In its more recent seasons, Fortnite has gotten steadily more ambitious with its use of NPC characters. Long gone are the days when the island was populated solely by players; now you can find, interact with, and now hire NPCs to join in the chaotic fun with you. Of course, if you’re going to hire a helping hand, you should probably know how to order them around. Here’s how to give a hired specialist a command in Fortnite.
How to Give a Hired Specialist a Command in Fortnite
As of Fortnite’s new Spring Breakout Event, a gaggle of NPC Specialists have been scattered around the island. If you approach one of these NPCs, you can recruit them to your cause and have them fight for you. These Specialists will fight and act autonomously for the most part, but there are a few simple commands you can give them if you need them to move or act in a particular way.
The first step is actually finding a Specialist to hire. Thanks to Fortnite.gg‘s interactive map, we know where you can find each of these Specialists.
The specialists you can recruit include:
- Sludge
- Munitions Expert
- Garrison
- Polar Patroller
- Longshot
- Insight
- Remedy
- Triage Trooper
To actually hire one, just walk right up to them, interact with them, and click the Hire option. They’ll start following you right away.
Commanding Hired Specialists
Once you’ve got a Specialist in your corner, a little map marker icon will appear in the top-right of your screen. This indicates that Command options are now available to you. Press and hold the button next to the symbol for a few seconds, and the Command wheel will appear. Just select one of the available Commands and press the Send button to issue an order to your Specialist.
You can command your hired Specialist to take one of the following actions:
- Wait: The Specialist will stop where they are and defend their position until ordered otherwise
- Move: The Specialist will make their way toward a designated point on the map that you indicate and hold position there
- Follow: The Specialist will stick as close to you as they are able with their movement abilities
- Revive: The Specialist will work to revive either you or an indicated downed teammate (only works in Duos, Trios, or Squads)
- Dismiss: Hold a separate button to dismiss the Specialist from your service
There is currently a quest associated with giving a hired Specialist a command in Fortnite, which you’ll automatically clear by using any one of these Commands (except for Dismiss). Even after you finish the quest, though, it wouldn’t hurt to keep them around. Always good to have an extra gun in your corner, after all!
