Imran Khan jailed for 3 years, Banned from elections for 5
Former Pakistan prime minister and cricket legend Imran Khan faced a major setback after an Islamabad trial court sentenced him to three years in jail in a corruption case. In addition to the jail term, the court also dealt a blow to his political career by barring him from participating in active politics for five years.
The corruption case revolves around Khan’s alleged illegal selling of gifts he received from foreign dignitaries during his tenure as prime minister. Government officials claimed that watches gifted by a royal family were sold in Dubai by Khan’s aides, leading to the corruption charges against him.
In a surprising move, Islamabad’s district and sessions court judge Humayun Dilawar announced the verdict, leaving Khan and his supporters shocked. Denying any wrongdoing, Khan’s legal team expressed their intention to file an immediate appeal, highlighting the lack of opportunity to present witnesses and round up arguments during the trial.

Imran Khan’s political journey has been marked by highs and lows. His tenure as prime minister was cut short when opponents secured a no-confidence vote against him last year. Khan alleged that the vote was influenced by the country’s powerful military, a claim denied by the military itself. This targeting of the military added fuel to the political fire and resulted in violent protests following Khan’s brief arrest on corruption charges in May.
As the Parliament’s term nears completion in the next two weeks, it is likely to be dissolved, paving the way for national elections to be held by mid-November or earlier. With Imran Khan’s arrest and ban from politics, the country’s political landscape is set for further shifts and challenges in the upcoming elections.
The corruption case against the former prime minister has not only raised questions about the misuse of power and public trust but has also brought to light the complexities of Pakistan’s political system. As the legal battle unfolds, the nation watches with keen interest to see how this chapter in Imran Khan’s political career will ultimately unfold and shape the future of Pakistan’s governance.
