Palestinians continue to live under apartheid regime
Recent reports have highlighted growing concerns over the accountability for the deaths of Palestinian children in the West Bank and the escalating incidents of settler violence in the region. Human Rights Watch has documented several fatal shootings of Palestinian children by Israeli forces and has called for increased international pressure to ensure accountability and justice.
In the year 2022, the West Bank witnessed the highest number of Palestinian children’s deaths in 15 years, with 2023 on track to exceed those numbers. At least 34 Palestinian children were reported to have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank as of August 22 this year. The fatalities have raised alarm bells about the use of lethal force by Israeli forces, especially considering that several of the children were unarmed or posed no immediate threat.
Human Rights Watch researchers conducted thorough investigations into these cases, interviewing witnesses, family members, and other stakeholders. In some instances, Palestinian children were shot while engaging in protests or confrontation with Israeli forces. However, the response from Israeli authorities has been criticized for disproportionate use of force, raising concerns about violations of international norms governing law enforcement actions.

The Israeli government has faced accusations of perpetuating apartheid and persecution against Palestinians. The term “apartheid” has been used by scholars, academics, and activists to describe the situation in the West Bank, a viewpoint that’s gaining momentum. Leading scholars and Holocaust experts, including Amos Goldberg, have defended the use of the term to accurately depict the reality on the ground.
Settler violence has also been a growing concern, with reports of attacks on Palestinians and their property becoming more common. Recent months have witnessed some of the worst scenes of settler violence in the occupied West Bank, some of which have turned deadly. The international community has criticized these actions, with even Israel’s closest ally, the US, describing certain incidents as “Jewish terrorism.”
While Palestinian cities are governed by the Palestinian Authority, Israel maintains control over a significant portion of the West Bank, including law enforcement, planning, and construction. The expansion of settlements has led to tensions and confrontations, with settlers accused of engaging in violence and intimidation.
In light of these alarming developments, human rights organizations are urging the international community to address these issues urgently. Calls for increased accountability for deaths of Palestinian children, as well as efforts to curb settler violence and expansion, are becoming more prominent.
