Alice Capsey’s unbeaten 67 steered England to a thrilling six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20 international, securing an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The win confirms England’s dominance in the series and sets the stage for further experimentation as they approach the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.
In a gripping encounter at Canterbury, England successfully chased down New Zealand’s total of 141-8, led by a masterful 4-25 performance from Sophie Ecclestone. Lauren Filer (2-17) and Sarah Glenn (1-14) also contributed with tight bowling spells that kept the Kiwis in check.
New Zealand’s Sophie Devine anchored the innings with an unbeaten 58 from 42 balls, providing crucial runs in the final overs. Opener Suzie Bates added 38, but the team struggled to accelerate in the latter part of their innings.
England’s chase was off to a rocky start with Maia Bouchier falling for a duck on the first ball. However, Capsey and Sophia Dunkley (35) combined for a 66-run partnership for the second wicket, stabilizing the innings. Despite Nat Sciver-Brunt’s dismissal without scoring, Capsey’s mature and calculated approach guided England to victory.
With 28 runs needed from 17 balls, Capsey provided a decisive blow with a towering six off Amelia Kerr. A brief cameo from Freya Kemp, who scored 16 off eight balls, helped England close in on the target. Capsey then sealed the win with a streaky shot, finishing the game with four balls to spare.
The victory puts England in an experimental phase as they look ahead to the T20 World Cup in October. With Heather Knight rested, Nat Sciver-Brunt captained the side, showcasing her leadership potential. England also gave Danni Wyatt a rest, allowing Dunkley to open the batting.
Capsey’s innings, characterized by a slower strike rate of 111.66, reflects her evolving maturity. Her 67 not out is a career-best T20 score, surpassing her previous high of 51 against Sri Lanka and Ireland in 2023.
