Global experts in artificial intelligence believe the coming decade will dramatically reshape how humans interact with machines. Some predict AI could reach human level intelligence and play a major role in society by 2030. Others warn about risks tied to misuse, misinformation, and economic disruption. While opinions vary, scholars agree that education, ethical development, and responsible leadership will determine how AI influences the future.

Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, and experts around the world believe its role in society could look very different by 2030. When a group of eight global AI scholars were asked about the future of artificial intelligence, their responses revealed both excitement and concern about what lies ahead.

The discussion included leading figures in the field such as Gary Marcus of New York University, AI futurist Ray Kurzweil, and several professors who specialize in artificial intelligence, robotics law, and technology ethics.

Kurzweil predicted that machines could reach human level intelligence around 2029. If that happens, 2030 may become the first year when artificial intelligence begins to influence society in deeper and more direct ways. Some experts believe this shift could transform industries, research, and daily life.

Benjamin Rossman, a professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, offered a particularly bold view. He suggested that artificial intelligence could evolve into something entirely new on Earth. In his words, it could eventually be recognized as a “new species,” moving beyond the idea of machines as simple tools.

Other scholars approached the future with caution. Stuart Russell, a distinguished professor at the University of California, Berkeley, warned that powerful AI systems could create serious risks if their goals conflict with human interests. According to Russell, advanced artificial intelligence might pursue objectives that are not aligned with human well being if it is not carefully designed and regulated.

Joanna Bryson, an AI ethics scholar at the Hertie School of Governance in Germany, offered a different perspective. She believes the greater risk may come from humans themselves. Bryson argued that governments and large corporations could misuse artificial intelligence systems for control or influence. In her view, AI should be treated like a powerful tool, and the responsibility for its impact ultimately rests with the people who operate it.

Several experts also raised concerns about how artificial intelligence could influence democracy. Algorithms that reinforce confirmation bias, along with the spread of deepfake videos and AI generated misinformation, may make it harder for people to distinguish between reliable information and manipulation.

Another emerging issue involves what researchers call “digital colonialism.” As AI technologies grow more powerful, some countries could become dependent on a small number of nations or technology companies that control advanced systems and data.

Despite the debates, scholars largely agree on one critical factor for the future of AI: talent. Most experts believe that attracting and supporting top researchers will determine which countries and institutions lead the next wave of technological development.

Education will also need to adapt. In a world where AI can provide quick answers, experts say the most valuable human skill will be the ability to ask strong questions, analyze information, and think critically.

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, the years leading up to 2030 may become a defining period in shaping how humans and machines work together.
