French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for Western powers to remain vigilant in the face of the Ukraine crisis, stating that “all options are possible” while addressing the situation during a televised interview on Thursday.
While Macron acknowledged that the current circumstances do not necessitate the immediate deployment of Western troops to Ukraine, he stressed that such a possibility cannot be ruled out. He reiterated that the responsibility for any escalation lies with Moscow, emphasizing that France would not lead an offensive into Ukraine against Russia.
Describing the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as “existential” to France and Europe, Macron underscored the importance of maintaining strength and resolve. He warned against showing signs of weakness, emphasizing that a failure to respond effectively would amount to defeat.
Macron’s remarks come in the wake of discussions in the French parliament regarding the country’s strategy toward Ukraine. Symbolic votes in both the National Assembly and the Senate affirmed support for the bilateral security agreement signed between Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
To further address the crisis, Macron is set to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Berlin on Friday. The leaders will convene as part of the “Weimar Triangle” format, aiming to demonstrate unity and solidarity in supporting Ukraine amid ongoing military challenges.
As Kyiv faces shortages in military resources and contends with increased pressure from the Russian army, Macron, Scholz, and Tusk are expected to discuss avenues for providing additional support to Ukraine. This includes addressing critical needs such as ammunition, artillery, and air defense systems.
The meeting underscores the commitment of France, Germany, and Poland to stand in solidarity with Ukraine during this challenging period. As the conflict persists, the international community remains focused on bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities and promoting stability in the region.
