Anne Frank’s Diary Reveals Undiscovered Pages
In a recent discovery, new pages of Anne Frank’s diary surface revealing writings and jokes of a sexual manner.
The two pages were concealed by Frank in what researchers say is an attempt to hide from her family. Digital technologies revealed the hidden text, with the writing style varying from the rest of the diary with a choice of literary tone.
The context of the pages written by Frank in a manner through an imaginary character whom she is explaining sex to. The new pages start as Frank questioning, “I sometimes imagine that someone might come to me and ask me to inform him on sexual matters… how would I go about it”? The excerpt goes onto describe “rhythmical movements” referring to sex and refers to contraception as “internal medicament”.
The plaid covered diary dates back to 1942 when Frank would have been 13 years old. This is one of two diaries written by Frank with the first one written from 1942 to 1944, she heard on the radio that the Dutch government was planning on publishing eyewitness accounts of the people who suffered during World War 2.
The radio announcement became inspiration for Anne Frank to create “The Secret Annex” diary, in hopes of submitting after the war ended. She completed 215 pages worth of documentation until her family was discovered and shipped off to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, in which she died a couple of months after arrival.
The hidden pages were discovered in 2016 after scanning with digital technology, with the diary being examined once every 10 years. The new technology allows researchers to examine the diary without compromising the physical copy.
Pages 78 and 79 of the diary was covered with pieces of brown paper to conceal the writings. The writings can be viewed on the Anne Frank House website in Dutch, while they work out copyright restrictions to translate into English. Watch the videos above to learn more about the hidden diary pages.
