A Sports Filled Weekend Ahead
There’s something for everyone this weekend. Basketball, boxing, auto racing, golf, you name it. Even football of a sort, with the NFL scouting combine and its myriad drills (and endless analysis).
Your heiner and your recliner will be best buddies, so sit back and take in the whole of this visual smorgasbord. Here’s your Weekend TV Six-Pack…
If you like college hoops, your Friday starts well with No. 24 Iowa State visiting No. 10 West Virginia. The Mountaineers play tenacious defense. ESPN2 shows this at 7 p.m. ET. Saturday gets you basketball royalty – No. 17 Duke at No. 5 North Carolina. The shame of it is that both can’t lose. ESPN offers this ACC clash of the titans at 8:15 p.m.
Boxing fans won’t want to miss Saturday night’s welterweight (147 pounds) unification bout between Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia. They’re both undefeated. CBS will bring you this at 9 p.m.
When you wake up Saturday morning, you can take in the NFL scouting combine for hours and hours. NFL Network begins its coverage at 9 a.m. Watch very large people run 40-yard dashes slowly and very small people try to bench-press 225 pounds badly. Or don’t. There will also be lots of announcers talking in football jargon – the short area, mirror and slide, 3-technique, 9-route. You don’t really want to know.
On Sunday, you get NASCAR. Hard to tell which will be longer, the race at Atlanta Motor Speedway or its full name: The NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series Folds of Honor Quik Trip 500. Imagine, 325 miles of driving and not a Waffle House in sight. Fox, 2:30 p.m.
The final round of the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship also takes place on Sunday. The early action from 1-3 p.m. is on Golf Channel, with NBC taking over from 3-6 p.m. Rory McIlroy has been a scarce presence recently but he was one shot off the lead after Thursday’s opening round.
Kick back and enjoy. Before you know it you will be mowing the lawn on the weekend.
