Nick Kroll
The comedian Nick Kroll discusses the origins of his sketch turned Broadway show, ‘Oh, Hello.’ ‘Oh, Hello’ is a particular story about two 70 something-year-old “legendary bachelors” living on the Upper West Side of New York City. They refer to the Upper West Side as “the coffee breath” of neighborhoods. The show began playing in a downtown comedy club called Rififi.
The writers, Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, based their two characters on old men they saw and observed in the bookstore The Strand. They call The Strand “8 miles of books and 12 miles of loneliness”. Each man in the bookstore bought his own copy of Alan Alda’s autobiography called Never Have Your Dog Stuffed. After purchasing their books, the men went to a diner, where they began each reading their own book.
Kroll and Mulaney have been doing these two guys for 10 years on stage, where they say the characters keep evolving. Kroll is also part of a new movie called Loving v. Virginia, which is based on the true story of an interracial marriage and how the couple helped to overturn the ban on interracial marriages in the Supreme Court.
While he jokingly says he wished he had been chosen to play the husband in the movie, Kroll plays the ACLU lawyer. Kroll also discusses how he missed being in New York City while filming the movie. He feels much more stimulated when in New York and being around so many people.
