Reviewing All The Top Sports Action From The Weekend
The Atlantic Coast Conference placed three teams among the top four seeds in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament that begins Tuesday with the First Four play-in in Dayton, Ohio.
Duke, the ACC champion, earned the overall No. 1 speed. Virginia and North Carolina of the ACC also were placed on the top line. Gonzaga is also a No. 1 seed.
This marks the first time since 2009 that three teams from the same conference were awarded No. 1 seeds.
Michigan State, which defeated Michigan on Sunday for the Big Ten title, could easily have been a No. 1, but the selection committee did the Spartans no favors. Not only did they land as a second seed, they’ll have to get past Duke in the Elite Eight (should they make it that far) to continue.
Golf:
Rory McIlroy picked up his first PGA Tour victory in more than a year, winning The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, by one stroke over 48-year-old Jim Furyk. McIlroy certainly seemed due, having finished in the top six of his each of his last five starts. McIlroy had an early double-bogey in the final round, but made birdie on 11, 15, and 16.
Elsewhere:
Kyle Busch won NASCAR’s Auto Club 400 race in Fontana, California, besting runner-up Joey Logano by 2.354 seconds. Busch led for 134 of the 200 laps despite a penalty for speeding on pit road.
Errol Spence Jr. won every round on his way to a unanimous decision on Saturday night over Mikey Garcia for Spence’s welterweight title in Frisco, Texas.
The NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans called a timeout they didn’t have one and the free throw on the ensuing technical foul helped doom them to a 138-136 overtime loss to the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night.
The NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning won their 55th game to set a club record, defeating the Washington Capitals 6-3.
