The 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 was won by a rookie. Fitting, no?
American Alexander Rossi finished the race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday with no fuel left in his tank. His Honda was towed to the victory celebration.
“I have no idea how we pulled that off,” said Rossi, a 66-1 longshot. Carlos Munoz of Columbia finished second.
In the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Martin Truex Jr. led for a record 392 of 400 laps (or 588 of the 600 miles) for his first victory of the season and the fourth of his career. Kevin Harvick was second and Jimmie Johnson finished third.
Golf
Jordan Spieth won the Dean & DeLuca by three shots at Colonial in Fort Worth for his victory in his home state of Texas. Spieth, the World’s No. 2-ranked player, will seek to defend his U.S. Open title in three weeks at Oakmont.
NBA
Game 7 of the Western Conference finals is Monday night after the Golden State Warriors roared from behind on Saturday night to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 108-101. Klay Thompson set a playoff record with 11 3-pointers for the Warriors. Thompson scored 41 points and Stephen Curry added 31 as the Warriors outscored the Thunder 33-18 in the final quarter. The winner plays the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.

North Carolina defeated Maryland 13-7 to win the NCAA women’s lacrosse title on Sunday. The loss was Maryland’s first of the year. If Maryland wants payback, Monday is the day. The men’s championship game pits the Terps against the Tar Heels in Philadelphia. … The New York Yankees got only one hit but beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1. Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning. … The Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-6 in 13 innings on Carlos Correa’s pinch-hit three-run homer. … Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg improved to 9-0, pitching six innings of a 10-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. He allowed one hit and struck out four.
