The horse that finished first didn’t win
Maximum Security was disqualified after an objection Saturday, marking the first time in 145 iterations of the Kentucky Derby that the first finisher failed to win due to an incident on the track.
The 65-1 underdog Country Home was declared the winner after a 20-minute inquiry into Maximum Security’s interference with several other horses. Maximum Security was awarded 17th place.
The horse’s owner, Gary West, told the Today Show on Monday that he would appeal the decision to the Kentucky Racing Commission and that Maximum Security would not run in the next Triple Crown race, the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on May 19.
