Remembering The Iconic Hollywood Film Star

Doris Day, the sunny blonde who graced the screen during the golden age of Hollywood in the 1950s and 60s, has died at age 97. Day’s animal-welfare foundation, The Doris Day Animal Foundation, says the actress was in great health until she suddenly contracted a case of pneumonia.

Day starred in three dozen films and recorded more than 600 songs, according to the Associated Press. At the height of her popularity, Day topped both the Billboard and box office charts, making her one of the most successful entertainers of her era.

Fellow Hollywood stars offered their condolences as the news spread on Monday morning.

“Doris Day was a great actress & a lovely, gracious lady,” singer Gloria Gaynor tweeted after Day’s death was confirmed. “My condolences to all who loved her. My prayers are with her family & loved ones. She was a dedicated protector of animal rights & animal welfare on top of her wonderful voice and amazing on-screen talent. She will be missed.”

“Extremely sad news,” actress Angela Lansbury tweeted. “Doris Day was an extraordinary talent & even greater human being, who devoted her life to helping others, especially those, who have no voice of their own. One of the biggest stars ever, yet so unaffected & down-to-earth. She’s with angels now. RIP & farewell.”

Before her death, Day was living a quiet life in California, devoting her time to animal rights activism and other charitable work.
