Protests Against Copper Plant Turn Violent
Anti-pollution protestors in Tuticorin, India have demanded the closure of a copper plant that has been negatively impacting the residents for months. The plant has polluted ground water endangering fisheries. After nothing was done, anger quickly turned violent. Police fired rubber bullets at the crowds and ammunition over their heads to instill fear. Protestors set police vehicles as well as buses on fire. So far, 10 people are reported deceased and dozens are injured.
Opposition politicians have reported that the government’s response was unnecessarily violent. The plant is currently closed as the company seeks a new license to actually expand the plant. Protests intensified when locals were educated about the company’s future plans. The British owner says it is compliant with environmental standards and is a victim of false propaganda. While the government is investigating the shooting, they are defending the police response.
