Trump won’t go out without a fight
The Democrats are in the middle of an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, centered around his request that the Ukrainian President investigate rival presidential candidate Joe Biden in return for military aid. But Trump isn’t playing along. In an eight-page letter to Nancy Pelosi, the highest-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, White House Counsel Pat Cipollone said the inquiry “violates fundamental fairness.”
“Your highly partisan and unconstitutional effort threatens grave and lasting damage to our democratic institutions, to our system of free elections, and to the American people,” Cipollone wrote. “The effort to impeach President Trump–without regard to any evidence of his actions in office–is a naked political strategy that began the day he was inaugurated, and perhaps even before.”
Democrats maintain that Trump has explicitly and repeatedly asked foreign powers to interfere in the 2020 Presidential election, which violates the law and the U.S. Constitution. But Trump counters that the inquiry is a “witch hunt,” an effort to overturn the results of a free and democratic election.
