Kanye West enters the 2020 presidential race

As of Wednesday, Kanye West filed the paperwork to be an official independent candidate for the 2020 Presidential Election on the Oklahoma ballot. Two weeks ago, Kanye West hinted on Twitter that he was considering running as a candidate for the 2020 presidential race and filed his official campaign paperwork.

West filed his campaign paperwork for Oaklahoma to qualify the celebrity as an independent candidate on the November ballot. Independent candidates have possibly required to pay fees and file paperwork for each state to get their spot on the ballot, these are some of the challenges West faces as an independent candidate.

An Oklahoma election spokesperson reports that West submitted a statement of candidacy and paid the required $35,000 filing fee. West happened to file for candidacy on the last day of the required deadline.

West’s team also filed a statement of organization to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) designating the Kanye 2020 principal campaign committee. Andrews Bodiford was named as treasurer of the committee according to the FEC forms who work to spend and raise money for the 2020 Kanye committee.

Though West filed a statement of organization, a spokesperson of the FEC reports West has yet to have filed a statement of candidacy that under federal law would consider West as a presidential candidate. The FEC spokesperson goes onto explain that West is required to file the statement of candidacy within 15 days of spending or raising more than $5,000 in federal campaign funding.

West might have just made his way on the Oklahoma ballot, but he has missed the deadline for several other states including Texas and Florida. West has the chance to make it on the ballot in several other states but some would require thousands of signatures from residents to land on the ballot.

Kanye West faced controversy for supporting President Donald Trump and recently announced he no longer supports him with some speculating this was West’s attempt to separate from his competition before the election.
