The West Bank on Fire: Israel’s Most Intense Military Offensive in Decades

In a significant escalation of tensions, Israel launched a forceful military operation in the occupied West Bank, marking its most intense action in almost twenty years. The operation involved drone strikes and the deployment of hundreds of troops, resulting in a death toll of at least ten Palestinians, with over 100 others wounded.

The crackdown resembles the military tactics employed by Israel during the second Palestinian uprising in the early 2000s.

The offensive primarily targeted the Jenin refugee camp, a stronghold for militants in the West Bank’s northern region. The conflict erupted shortly after midnight and continued throughout the day, with the streets of the densely populated camp engulfed in black smoke. The clash was accompanied by the sounds of gunfire and buzzing drones overhead. At the same time, military bulldozers plowed through narrow streets, causing damage to buildings to clear the way for Israeli forces.

Jamal Huweil, a political activist in the camp, voiced his concerns about the ongoing operation, stating, “Bulldozers are destroying the streets, snipers are inside and on roofs of houses, drones are hitting houses, and Palestinians are killed in the streets.” He expressed his belief that the operation would ultimately fail.

To assert control over the area, the military imposed restrictions on traffic in and out of Jenin, rendering the city desolate. Power and water supplies were disrupted within the camp, further exacerbating the dire situation.

While the Israeli military faced sporadic stone-throwing by Palestinian youths, an overwhelming number of ambulances rushed to the local hospital against continuous shooting and explosions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remained resolute, asserting, “In recent months, Jenin has become a haven for terrorism. We are putting an end to this.” He claimed that the operation aimed to dismantle militant command centers and confiscate weapons, supplies, and factories while minimizing civilian harm.

The Israeli military spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, justified the operation by citing approximately 50 attacks from Jenin in the past year. Hagari also accused militants of using a United Nations building and a mosque for their activities.

There is no indication of when the operation will conclude, as neither Netanyahu nor Hagari provided any specific timeline. The occupied West Bank has witnessed an alarming surge in violence, resulting in the deaths of over 130 Palestinians this year alone.
