Impeachment trial moved onto Senate
President Trump’s impeachment trial begins today in the U.S. Senate, where Senators will vote on whether to remove Trump from office on charges he obstructed Congress and abused his power. However, the Republican-controlled Senate is unlikely to cast the sixty votes necessary to remove Trump from office.
Nancy Pelosi, the leading Democrat in the House of Representatives, sent the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate after a month-long delay, saying she was worried the trial would be unfair.
“The trial will commence in earnest on Tuesday,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said. “We will pledge to rise above the petty factionalism and do justice for our institutions, for our states and for the nation.”
Trump insists he’s not worried about the impeachment “hoax.” On Wednesday, he retweeted two tweets from Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, blasting the Democrats for trying to undermine democracy.
“Tennesseans care about serious issues: trade relations, border security, and lasting tax relief. Democrats care about one thing and one thing only: undoing the results of the 2016 election,” Blackburn tweeted. “How can we trust anything in the House Democrats’ impeachment* report? Their lead investigator, Adam Schiff, fabricated a conversation between President Trump and the Ukrainian president.”
