The popular Halloween costumes for 2019
Halloween is only weeks away, and Google just released a list of the most-searched-for Halloween costumes of 2019. The most popular costume on Google users’ radar? “It”–also known as Pennywise the clown from Steven King’s classic horror novel.
Pennywise’s surge in popularity is most certainly due to the film adaptation of “It,” which came out in 2017, as well as “It: Chapter Two,” which is in theaters now. Taking the second spot was a classic costume: a witch.
Also in the top five most popular costumes are “Spider-Man,” “Dinosaur,” and “Descendants,” the last of which is a popular movie series by the Disney Channel. Costumes from the flamboyant 80’s decade, as well as the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” are in the top 15.
Costumes vary in popularity by state. Google posted an interactive map on its “Google Freightgeist” site, showing cities that break the mold and choose more unusual costumes to search for. The most-searched costume in Eureka, California, for example, is “Angel.” Juneau, Alaska, is Eureka’s counterpart, where devil costumes are the most popular Halloween search term. Residents of Charlottesville, Virginia, favor 1990s costumes, while people in Naples and Orlando, Florida, are dressing up in the fashions of the 1980s. In West Virginia, several towns searched for Fortnite-inspired costumes.
If you’re still unsure what to go as this Halloween, Google offers a handy “Costume Wizard” tool to help you select a costume based on your personal tastes.
