Huffman Goes To Court For College Admissions Scandal
Former “Desperate Housewives” star Felicity Huffman is expected to plead guilty today in the college admissions cheating scandal, dubbed “Varsity Blues” by the FBI. Huffman and other celebrities, including “Full House” actress Lori Loughlin, are accused of paying off scammers and rigging the SAT in order to get their children into prestigious colleges.
Legal experts say pleading guilty is Huffman’s best bet, and will result in the lightest possible sentence. While Huffman could theoretically receive twenty years in prison for her crimes, cutting a deal with prosecutors means she will likely serve four to ten months.
“Felicity Huffman is like many white-collar defendants for the first time,” said Danny Cevallos, a legal analyst for NBC News, “She’s racing to court to plead guilty, cooperate with the government, get the lowest sentence possible and just move on with her life.”
Cevallos said other defendants, including Lori Loughlin, are fighting the charges, which could end up backfiring in federal court.
“White-collar defendants like Lori Loughlin who is in trouble for the first time in their lives often have difficulty understanding what they’re facing if they go to trial in federal court,” Cevallos told NBC.
Cevallos continues, “Lori Loughlin pleaded not guilty, and the government shortly afterward hit her with more charges,” he said. “This is government prosecution 101 — the longer she waits, the worse it may be.”
