What Is Currently Known
Sante Fe is starting memorial services for the lives lost during the recent school shooting. More information is coming about the incident and upcoming court proceedings for the 17-year-old gunman, Dimitrios Pagourtzis.
The teenage boy is accused of killing 10 people, along with injuring 10 more during the shoot-out. The police responded four minutes after the first 911 call and had Pagourtzis surrender after 25 minutes of negotiation.
Pagourtzis is being held without bail at the Galveston County Jail and is on suicide watch. He has yet to enter a plea for the charges of aggravated assault on a public servant and capital murder of multiple people.
The father of the shooter, Antonios Pagourtzis, was interviewed by The Wall Street Journal on Monday and claims that his son was bullied at school. He goes onto say that the mistreatment of his son at school is behind the motive for the shooting. This claim was investigated by the Sante Fe Independent School District and was confirmed to be untrue.
When asked about the guns his son used for the shooting, he wouldn’t discuss how his son came to possess the weapons. During the attack the shooter used an illegal sawed-off shotgun and a .38 caliber handgun. Law enforcement is still determining whether the father obtained the guns for his son. The handgun was confirmed for purchase in the early 1990’s, that investigators have identified the original buyers.
Looking into the family dynamic of the shooter, his father is an immigrant from Greece with previous charges for misdemeanor assault and both cases dismissed. The victims attorneys in this case and Antonios Pagourtzis, denied to comment on these charges.
Antonios Pagourtzis agreed to be interviewed by Antenna TV in Greece and confirmed that he owned the guns used by his son during the shooting. He goes onto say, “My son, to me, is not a criminal. He’s a victim.”
The victims that lost their lives include student, Shana Fisher, Chris Stone, Jared Black, Christian Riley Garcia, Angelique Ramirez, Aaron Kyle McLeod, and Kimberly Vaughn. Another student victim, Sabika Sheikh, returned to her home of Pakistan today for a funeral that had hundreds in attendance, including Senior politicians.
Teachers that died during the shoot-out include Glenda Ann Perkins and Cynthia Tisdale. The resource officer of the school, John Barnes, was the one to confront the gunman and is receiving intensive care at the hospital.
This is the 22nd school shooting of 2018, showing that gun reform should be considered to prevent future school shootings. Learn more about the details of this case in the videos above.
