Warren Is Opposed To “Fancy Fundraisers”
Democratic candidate for President Elizabeth Warren, a Senator from Massachusetts, slammed her opponents for spending too much time at “fancy fundraisers” with high-dollar donors instead of focusing on building grassroots support.
“I don’t spend time at fancy fundraisers,” Warren wrote on Twitter. “Instead, I spend my time meeting voters and thanking grassroots donors who chip in what they can. Donate $3 to my campaign, and you might just get a call from me to thank you!”
Warren made the remarks after Biden attended a high-dollar fundraiser with big-name donors in New York. The fundraiser was hosted by Jim Chanos, an investor, and cost guests nearly $3,000 per person to attend.
Throughout much of the primary, Warren held third place in most polls, behind former Vice President Joe Biden, the front-runner, and former Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. But more recent polls show that Warren is gaining ground, securing second place behind Biden. The New York Times reported this week that Wall Street donors are favoring Biden, along with South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Bernie Sanders has also pledged to forgo big donations and focus on building a supportive base of small donors.
Warren’s campaign has been focused on economic inequality issues, and she recently rolled out a unique plan to offer free college to all Americans except the top 5% of income earners.
