Kamala Harris campaigning and the cover of Elle
Vice president nominee, Kamala Harris, graced the cover of the latest edition of Elle magazine including an in-depth interview of her political background and her running in the upcoming 2020 election. Harris is already making history as being the first woman of color to be on the ticket for a major party.
If Biden wins the election, Harris will make history as the first Asian American and Black vice president. This feat will be the culmination of Harris’ lifetime as her family was involved in the first civil rights movement when she was just a baby.
Harris recalls that she remembers some of her earliest childhood memories of being wheeled in a stroller with her parents and uncle during a civil rights march in Oakland, California. She explained that these early memories influenced her to start her political career and becoming a member of the U.S. Senate.
Harris has practiced dignity throughout her political career and is focuses on this while greeting people based on African traditions. Instead of greeting someone by saying ‘Pleased to meet you,’ Harris says ‘I see you’ that identifies others as a complete human being.
“When you achieve equality, and freedom, and fairness, it’s not because I grant it to you. It’s because you fought for it because it is your right. This is not about benevolence or charity; it is about every human being’s God-given right.” – Kamala Harris
Harris explains this is important to give people the dignity they deserve and that all people in the county should be recognized for their full selves. Harris wants to use her time in office to make the country better for all including immigration reform, working closely with civil rights lawyers helping a list of clients that were detained by ICE officials, and how they were unable to get information from detained clients.
Harris disclosed that she attempted to contact the secretary for Homeland Security in an attempt to gain answers of why ICE detainees weren’t able to speak to their lawyers. The secretary at the time answered the phone asking how she obtained his number and why she was calling him while he was home.
Harris replied to his inquiry that she was one senator that represents one out of 11 Americans and demanded an explanation of why detainees weren’t allowed to contact their lawyers. Harris also wants to combat political corruption that can be seen with politicians and police brutality.
Harris attempted to run for the Presidential nomination but had to drop out of the race due to lack of campaign funding but returned as a strong candidate for the Vice Presidency alongside former Vice President of the Obama administration, Joe Biden. Kamala Harris is running this race alongside her running mate and will make American history of elected.
