Joe Biden confirmed as the 46th U.S. President
After the last 24 hours of absolute chaos at Capitol Hill following a massive pro-Trump riot, Congress confirmed the victory of president-elect Joe Biden winning with 306 Electoral College votes. This confirmation from Congress seals Joe Biden’s position as the next president of the United States and will be inaugurated on January 20.
Following this confirmation, nothing can stop Biden from taking office with the Supreme Court rejecting unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud and the current Vice President Mike Pence has no authority to stop the certification of Biden’s win. This news comes later than intended due to the massive pro-Trump riot that caused a delay in the schedule and having all members of Congress executing an emergency exit.
Democracies around the world expressed horror at images of a mob storming the US Capitol to stop the confirmation of Joe Biden as the next US president.

Trump incited this riot by tweeting on December 19, “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, be wild,” in an attempt to host a rally on the day Congress would convene to count the Electoral College votes. Thousands of Trump supporters started gathering near the Ellipse starting at 6 a.m. yesterday for the “Save America Rally” and Trump takes advantage to incite the riot encouraging supporters to convene at Capitol Hill during his speech at 10 a.m.
Lawmakers gathered for the joint session in the House of Representatives chamber to count the Electoral College votes by 1 p.m. and within 10 minutes rioters are resisting the police on the steps of Capitol Hill. The first official evacuation of Capitol Hill started at 1:26 p.m. and by 1:40 p.m. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser enacted a citywide curfew for 6 p.m. while District police request more law enforcement backup.

Within 1 hour the rioters breach police lines and storm the west side of Capitol with some rioters scaling the walls. While the police attempted to contain the riot, Trump didn’t act to call off the riot but simply tweeting, “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!”
Shortly after Trump’s tweet, his supporters started breaking the Capitol windows at 2:39 p.m. and within five minutes there are reports of shots fired in the House chamber. By 3 p.m. Trump’s supporters were taking photos after invading the Senate floor and other parts of the Capitol including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s office.

Within the next hour, the Nation Gaurd of the District of Columbia was mobilized with 1,100 troops to support local law enforcement and at 4:05 congressional leaders started evacuating from the Capitol. Trump tweeted a video at 4:17 p.m. calling on his supporters to go home and Twitter banned the President from tweeting for 12 hours while not allowing comments or retweets.
By 8 p.m. members of Congress reconvene to resume the recounting of the Electoral College votes and confirmed Biden’s victory early this morning. The aftermath of the riot was four fatalities, one shooting victim, damage to the recently renovated Capitol building, and the resignation of four White House staffers.
