Chief Of Border Patrol Caught On Social Media
Carla Provost, the Chief of Customs and Border Patrol, or CBP, admits she was part of a secret Facebook group where members told racist and sexist jokes, demeaned the migrants they detained, and posted offensive photoshopped photos of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, who has been highly critical of CBP.
Provost said she uses Facebook “very, very rarely” and that she turned over her account to investigators when the scandal came to light. Provost said she didn’t even realize she was a member of the group, which reportedly included about 9,000 active and retired Customs and Border Patrol employees. Provost did admit to commenting on a few of the group’s post but claims she did not see the highly controversial posts that have generated outrage.
“I didn’t even know at the time what group I was on,” she said. “I am as outraged as everyone else when it comes to the statements that were made on that page… A few bad apples are not representative of the organization.”
The Facebook group is under investigation and some members of the group have been put on leave from their jobs with CBP. Some of the most offensive posts included members criticizing immigrants who have died crossing the border, including a father and a 1-year-old girl who drowned in the Rio Grande last month.
